The Brisbane Award

The BDA launched the Brisbane Award in 2007 to mark the Association’s 50th Anniversary.

The Award is designed to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of individuals and organisations in creating a better Brisbane. The contribution may be through the provision of a place or an individual’s involvement in projects. While the place needs to be a recent addition, the individual contribution could be for a body of work or a long-term contribution to the city.

In 2007 the Award was presented to Brisbane City Council in recognition of several civic and urban design initiatives that have made significant contributions to the quality of life in Brisbane. These include the SCIPS programme for providing suburban communities with their own identities; City Cat ferries; the Urban Renewal Programme in Teneriffe and Newstead; River Walk; and the Queen Street Mall refurbishments.

In 2008 the BDA honoured Steve Wilson, Chairman of South Bank Corporation and Executive Chairman of Wilson HTM Investment Group for his extraordinary contribution to Brisbane’s urban fabric and economic and social well-being. Specifically, Steve was recognised for his involvement in several significant public projects including the redevelopment of South Bank, the development of the highly successful Goodwill Bridge, preservation of Queensland’s Maritime Museum, the completion of St John’s Cathedral, and the activation of the Brisbane River.

The Brisbane Award is celebrated at a gala event attended by BDA members and Brisbane design and business leaders.
